It is finally live

After some weeks of trialing different CMS scripts, and playing with them, I have finally managed to get www.ausvegan.com up and running. The site is live at the moment, and whilst it may be a little bare in spots, over the coming weeks, I will be adding new content to the pages, adding more links, … Read more

The Meat/Dairy Myth

Out here in Australia we are bombarded with advertising propaganda that is telling us that meat is the “main meal”, that we owe our development to red meat. That dairy is essential for development, that it is needed for strong bodies etc. The funny thing with these ads is that that is just what they are, advertising. They are usually paid for by the Meat & Livestock Association or the Australian Dairy Association. These organisations have a vested interest in promoting these products. Any research that, is promoted by these organisations should be viewed with “a grain of salt”. It is only natural that groups like the MLA or ADA would only publish favourable ‘scientific’ research, just the same as the findings that are published on this site.
Being a ‘pro-vegan’ site, of course there will only be articles about how bad meat is, and I make no apologies for that. I believe people should be informed about both sides of the argument and make up their own mind based on all the facts rather than advertising with emotional triggers.

Wouldn’t you hate to be involved in the racing industry at the moment?

I think that all these people in the racing and associated industries have to be one of the most selfish groups of people ever to be written about. Every news report, article in the paper, and radio segment is saying how much money these poor hard done by people are loosing. Yet nothing is said about the condition of the horses, how they are feeling, what drugs they are getting pumped with, and so on.

Industries face challenges all the time, it is the ones that can weather the storms that need looking after and protecting. Not those that only have an “entertainment” value. I was involved in the transport industry for a few years, and there is still yet to be any adequate government assistance for it. Fuel costs are rising, registration is rising, roads are getting crappier, and still there is no hand out from the government. And there is still yet to be a Royal Commisssion into fuel.

The racing industry is stopped by an outbreak of Equine Influenza, and now they want money and to point the finger at someone.

What an appalling record Qld has.

Reading the 2005/2006 annual report from the RSCPA (Qld) some dreadful statistics come to light.

From page 11 comes this.

The “kill rate” for all shelters in Qld was 56%; thankfully, this rate has been falling when compared to the past 2 years, with 63% in 2004/2005 and 73% in 2003/2004.

The highest incoming source is owners surrendering their animals, and the dominant types of animal surrendered were cats.

To the RSPCA’s credit, the re-homing rate is ever so slowly increasing, in 2005/2006 the rate was 29% up from 27% and 24% for 2004/2005 and 2003/2004 respectively.

Equine Influenza brings Australian horse racing to a halt!

25 August 2007.
All movement of horses withing a 10km exclusion zone of the Centennital Park Stables has been stopped today, due to an outbreak of Equine Influenza. This has also stopped all the race meeetings in NSW, Qld, Vic, SA and WA. This is good news for the horses who won’t have to be subjected to cruel and inhuman treatement, just so gamblers can get their fix.

Unfortunately, this probably means that horses throughout this country are going to get pumped full of a coctail of drugs in an effort to prevert this from spreading or infecting any further horses.

Vegan Fitness Part I

This is going to be the start of a series of posts about how to improve you general health and fitness. For some people, they think that just because they are vegan and eating right, that they automatically have “immunity” from many of the other health problems that alot of meat eaters have. This couldn’t be further from the truth. While it is true that a vegan shouldn’t have the traditional high cholesterol levels, or fall victim to Type II diabetes, there is the risk that you could fall victim to heart disease or blood pressure issues.

Before we get into talking about exercise and how often we should do it, we will delve a little bit further into the human body. First cab off the rank is Blood Pressure:
